In the early hours of a Tuesday morning in Norfolk, Virginia, tragedy struck an 18-year-old male local rapper. Anthony M. Sinclair, known in the music scene as VilleBoy Ant, was found fatally wounded from a gunshot outside the Days Inn Motel on North Military Highway on August 8, 2017. Responding to a call about shots fired around 1 a.m., first responders discovered Sinclair, who was pronounced dead at the scene. His death marked the 19th homicide in the city that year.
Sinclair's music videos often depicted the violence and gang life that was a harsh reality in some Norfolk neighborhoods. In the wake of his death, fears of a potential escalation in a gang feud rippled through the community. Norfolk's police chief at the time, Larry Boone, issued a public plea, urging the community to become more involved in the lives of their children and to recognize and act upon the signs of criminal behavior. Sinclair's mother, while acknowledging her son wasn't perfect, stated he was chasing his dream of a music career.
