Nicholas Jerome Ackies, an 18-year-old freshman at Norfolk State University, tragically lost his life on October 27, 2017. Ackies, who was a defensive lineman on the university's football team, was shot and killed at an off-campus apartment in Norfolk, Virginia. The incident occurred in the 800 block of Hayes Street, where emergency dispatchers received a call about gunshots shortly after 6 p.m. Upon arrival, police found Ackies inside the apartment, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
