In the early hours of November 4, 2017, in Norfolk, Virginia, a violent exchange of gunfire tragically ended the life of 20-year-old James Nakia Henderson Jr. The shooting, which occurred around 3 a.m. in the 700 block of Washington Avenue, also left two other men wounded with non-life-threatening injuries. Henderson, a male, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Originally from Chicago, Henderson was an Aviation Boatswain's Mate Airman in the U.S. Navy.
He had enlisted in December 2015 and was assigned to the carrier Gerald R. Ford in April 2016. The Navy expressed its condolences to his family and friends following the incident.
The Norfolk Police Department investigated the shooting and quickly made an arrest. Donald Bowman, a 26-year-old Aviation Boatswain's Mate 3rd Class stationed on the carrier Eisenhower, was taken into custody after being treated for a gunshot wound sustained during the altercation.
Bowman was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony for his alleged role in the fatal shootout. He was held at the Norfolk City Jail without bond. While an arrest was made, authorities did not publicly disclose a motive for the shooting.
