In the early morning hours of September 30, 2018, the life of 23-year-old Christopher DeShawn Martin, a male resident of Norfolk, Virginia, was tragically cut short. Just before 1 a.m., police responded to reports of a gunshot disturbance in the 8500 block of Wayland Street in the Bayview section of the city. Upon arrival, they discovered Martin outside, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting led Norfolk police to identify a suspect. Later the same day, authorities arrested 20-year-old Tyquan Shakir Winslow in connection with Martin's death. Winslow was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was held at the Norfolk City Jail without bond pending legal proceedings. Detectives did not immediately release a motive or the circumstances that led to the violent encounter.
In September 2019, just under a year after the shooting, Tyquan Shakir Winslow appeared in court and pleaded guilty to reduced charges. Instead of murder, he admitted to involuntary manslaughter and one count of shooting in the commission of a felony. Two months later, in November 2019, Winslow was scheduled to be sentenced for his role in the death of Christopher DeShawn Martin, bringing a legal conclusion to a case that began with a sudden and violent loss of life on a quiet residential street.
