In the late summer of 2018, a heartbreaking discovery was made on a street in South Richmond, Virginia. Twenty-one-year-old Sherece Cook, a Black female from Louisa County, was found inside her SUV on Peyton Avenue on August 10th. She had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. In a poignant and fortunate turn of events, two children, both under the age of three, were found unharmed in the back seat of the vehicle.
The Richmond Police Department
immediately began investigating her death as a homicide. Officers had initially responded to reports of random gunfire in the area, which was soon updated to a report of a person being shot. Upon their arrival, they found Ms. Cook in the driver's seat of her vehicle. Her mother later shared the profound grief and disbelief of the family, describing the act as heartless and revealing that her daughter had a premonition that something terrible was about to happen.

On September 4, 2018, the Richmond Police Department announced that a multi-jurisdictional grand jury had returned indictments in connection with several recent homicides in the city, including the murder of Sherece Cook.
A suspect, identified as 25-year-old Jimmie Smith of Chesterfield, was charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
