In the quiet early morning hours of March 10, 2017, the life of 33-year-old Quanta Nashall Chandler, a dedicated nurse, was tragically cut short in a harrowing ordeal that began in her Henrico, Virginia home. Her ex-boyfriend, 36-year-old Andre Lamont Richardson, forced his way into her residence on Collins Road, armed and agitated. Inside, he took Chandler and her two cousins hostage.
While he eventually released her cousins, he kept Chandler captive, initiating a tense and prolonged standoff with law enforcement.
For nine grueling hours, Henrico Police, including their Emergency Response Team and negotiators, worked to de-escalate the volatile situation. Richardson, however, remained uncooperative, firing shots at the responding officers and vowing not to be taken alive. The fragile hope for a peaceful resolution was shattered around noon when multiple gunshots were heard from within the house.
Upon breaching the home, officers made a grim discovery. Both Quanta Chandler and Andre Richardson were found with fatal gunshot wounds to the head. Chandler succumbed to her injuries that same day, while Richardson died the following day. The investigation concluded that Richardson shot and killed Chandler before turning the gun on himself in a tragic murder-suicide. No other suspects were sought, and no arrests were made, as the perpetrator had taken his own life. The devastating event left Chandler's family, friends, and colleagues to mourn the loss of a woman remembered for her bright and bubbly personality and her dedication to her nursing career at the Henrico County Jail.
