In the late hours of a spring evening in Newport News, Virginia, the life of 25-year-old Davon Mathews was tragically cut short. On May 19, 2020, a home invasion on Logan Place turned deadly, leaving a community in mourning and a family searching for answers. Davon Mathews, a Black/African American male, was identified as the victim of the fatal encounter.
The incident unfolded around 10:45 p.m. when Newport News police responded to reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered a chaotic scene with two men inside the residence suffering from gunshot wounds. Both of these individuals were transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. However, the grim discovery of Davon Mathews' body outside the rear of the home marked a tragic turn in the investigation. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations by law enforcement indicated that the violence erupted as a result of a home invasion. During the course of this invasive crime, multiple shots were fired within the residence, striking the three victims. While evidence was collected from the scene and processed by the police, the trail for those responsible grew cold.
