On an evening in April, the life of 18-year-old Kahli Rahquan Curry was tragically cut short. On April 16, 2019, in the 400 block of Goose Circle in Newport News, Virginia, police responded to a call of gunshots at 7:26 p.m. Arriving at the scene, they found Kahli suffering from a gunshot wound. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. At the time of his death, he was a high school senior.
The investigation into the shooting death of the young man continued for over a year.
In December 2020, the Newport News Police Department announced an arrest in the case. Adrian Elijah Pierce, then 20 years old, was taken into custody on December 3, 2020. He faced a number of charges, including second-degree murder, maliciously shooting into an occupied building, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Following his arrest, Adrian Elijah Pierce was brought to trial for his role in Kahli Rahquan Curry's death. A jury convicted him of second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and misdemeanor destruction of property. An appeal of the conviction was later filed, where Pierce contended that the testimony of the two main witnesses against him was inherently incredible and that the Commonwealth had failed to prove he shot the victim. The appellate court, however, disagreed and affirmed the convictions.
