On a summer evening in Poughkeepsie, New York, the life of 24-year-old Tyshawn Crosslands was tragically cut short. On August 15, 2020, Crosslands was at a party at King Street Park, surrounded by approximately 40 people. The gathering turned chaotic at around 8:30 p.m. when gunfire erupted, and Crosslands was struck. As panic ensued and the crowd scattered, only one individual remained to help him until police arrived and began performing CPR.
He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
The violence did not end with the shooting at the park. In the hours that followed, between 9:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department received nine other reports of gunshots from various locations across the city. While these subsequent incidents were not directly connected to the shooting of Crosslands, they painted a grim picture of the violence plaguing the community that night.
In the wake of the homicide, the investigation into Tyshawn Crosslands' death has been met with challenges. Despite the large number of potential witnesses at the party, authorities have been hampered by a lack of cooperation. While numerous anonymous tips have been received, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in the case. The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department continues to appeal to the public for any information that could lead to a breakthrough in the investigation.
The community, shaken by the violence, came together to mourn and call for an end to the bloodshed. The organization SNUG, which stands for "guns" spelled backward, organized a rally at King Street Park, the very place where Crosslands was fatally shot. Around 50 people gathered to honor his memory and to send a message that the violence must stop. Community leaders at the event spoke of the deep hurt and outrage felt by residents and emphasized the need for collective action to heal and bring about change.
