In the early morning hours of September 28, 2017, the quiet of a Poughkeepsie, New York, neighborhood was broken by a single gunshot that ended the life of 30-year-old Christopher N. Chris Grover. A popular gymnastics coach, Grover was found deceased in the apartment he shared with his girlfriend, Nicole 'Nikki' Addimando. The male victim had been shot in the head at point-blank range while he was sleeping on his couch.
The events of that night and the subsequent legal proceedings would
deeply divide the community. Addimando, who did not deny pulling the trigger, claimed she acted in self-defense after years of escalating physical and sexual abuse at the hands of Grover. Her claims were supported by friends and advocates who pointed to a history of injuries. However, a six-month investigation by law enforcement uncovered what they described as inconsistencies in her story and a lack of evidence to corroborate the alleged abuse.
Prosecutors argued that the act was not one of self-preservation, but a calculated murder. They presented evidence suggesting the killing was intentional and planned. In April 2018, a Dutchess County jury found Nicole Addimando guilty of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. She was initially sentenced to 19 years to life in prison.
The case garnered national attention, with domestic violence advocates rallying in support of Addimando. In a significant turn of events, her sentence was dramatically reduced in July 2021 to seven and a half years under the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act. After serving a portion of her reduced sentence, Nicole Addimando was released from prison in January 2024.
