On an April evening in 2020, the life of 28-year-old Evan M. Davis was tragically cut short in his lifelong home of Poughkeepsie, New York. A graduate of Poughkeepsie High School, Evan was known as a hardworking deliveryman for Hudson Valley Harvest. In his personal time, he was an avid video game player and a devoted fan of the Baltimore Ravens. Friends and family remembered him as a man with a big heart who was actively working to build a better life for himself.
The fatal incident
occurred on the night of April 28, 2020, at the Martin Luther King Housing Project on Washington Street. At approximately 11:45 PM, police responded to reports of gunfire. Arriving at the scene, they discovered Evan Davis on the east side of Building 3, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving his loved ones to grapple with the sudden and violent loss.
The investigation into Evan's death led authorities to Carl Hannans, a 21-year-old former resident of Poughkeepsie. At the time of the shooting, Hannans was out on bail for a separate and violent crime. In May 2021, a grand jury indicted Hannans, leading to his arrest for the murder of Evan Davis. The charges against him included intentional murder, depraved indifference murder, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Ultimately, Carl Hannans was held accountable for his actions. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of Evan Davis. This sentence is to be served at the same time as a 23-year-to-life sentence for an unrelated attempted murder charge. While the legal proceedings brought a measure of justice, the community continues to feel the absence of a young man taken too soon.
