On a November evening in 1980, Police Officer James Dunston, a 33-year-old male, was thrust into a situation that would tragically end his life. He and his partner received a call about a burglary in progress on East 102nd Street in Manhattan and immediately responded. Unbeknownst to the officers, they were walking into a hostage situation where three armed individuals had forcibly entered an apartment, holding a family captive while awaiting the arrival of another family member with the
combination to a safe.
Upon their arrival, the officers knocked on the apartment door. As it opened, one of the suspects fired a shotgun, fatally wounding Officer Dunston. His partner returned fire and called for backup as the three assailants fled the scene. The immediate response from other officers led to the quick apprehension of one suspect, with the remaining two being captured by detectives the following day. A 17-year-old girl was also caught in the crossfire, resulting in the loss of sight in one of her eyes.
The judicial process that followed saw all three suspects, aged 24, 25, and 32 at the time, convicted of murder, assault, robbery, and burglary on February 9, 1982. Each was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Over the ensuing years, the paths of the convicted men diverged. The 24-year-old was granted parole on April 7, 2021, while the 25-year-old died in prison on October 5, 2021. Officer Dunston, a United States Army veteran, had served with the New York City Housing Authority Police Department for 11 years and was survived by his wife and three children.
