The Poughkeepsie High School student was near the intersection of Main and Clinton streets when a person, clad in a dark hooded jacket, a face mask, green pants, and black shoes, approached and fatally shot him in the head.
The shooting, which occurred in broad daylight, left the community shaken and authorities searching for answers.
The investigation into the death of the male teenager soon uncovered a grim narrative of gang rivalry and retaliation. Authorities determined that Jones's murder was not a random act but a calculated hit ordered as part of an ongoing feud between two rival gangs, the Gorilla Stone Nation and the Bully Hard Hunna Bloods. The tragic event was a reprisal for the killing of 16-year-old Frederick Wells three months earlier by a member of the Bully Hard gang.
In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement identified Brandon Soto, a prominent member of the Gorilla Stone gang, as a key figure in orchestrating the murder of Jalani Jones. Investigators revealed that Soto had driven a fellow teenage gang member to the location, provided him with the firearm, and given the directive to carry out the shooting. In an attempt to cover their tracks, Soto later set fire to the vehicle used in the crime and instructed others involved to delete their social media accounts.
Brandon Soto was subsequently arrested and faced multiple charges, including racketeering, conspiracy, and providing a firearm to a minor with the intent to commit a violent crime. In October 2022, Soto pleaded guilty to his role in the killing. He was later sentenced to 35 years in prison for his part in the murder of Jalani Jones and other gang-related offenses. The case highlighted the devastating impact of gang violence on the community and the lives of its youngest members.
