In the summer of 2015, a wave of violence gripped the city of Poughkeepsie, New York, and in the midst of it, a young man's life was tragically cut short. On the evening of June 30th, 21-year-old Shameik Floyd was discovered lying on Mansion Street, the victim of a single gunshot wound to his head. He was a Black male whose time was cruelly stolen.
Despite immediate medical attention, the injury proved fatal, and he succumbed shortly after being found, leaving a community in mourning and a family devastated.
The investigation into the death of Shameik Floyd stretched on for nearly two years, a period of uncertainty and anguish for his loved ones. Detectives from the City of Poughkeepsie Police, in collaboration with the Dutchess County District Attorney's Office and the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, diligently pursued leads. Their persistent efforts eventually bore fruit, leading them to two individuals who would be held accountable for the senseless act of violence that ended a young life.
Ultimately, two men, Kaheem Cummings, then 23, and Trent Yant, also 23 at the time, were arrested and faced charges in connection with the robbery and murder of Floyd. In December 2017, both men pleaded guilty. Cummings was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for first-degree murder, a sentence that would run consecutively with a term he was already serving for another murder. Yant was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in the robbery that led to Floyd's death. The resolution of the case brought a measure of justice for a life taken too soon, though it could never erase the pain of the loss.
