In the late summer of 2016, the life of James Gerard White, a 32-year-old male resident of Hampton, Virginia, was brought to a tragic and violent end. On the afternoon of August 21st, inside an apartment at the Warwick Village Apartments on Nelson Drive in Newport News, a senseless act of violence unfolded, forever altering the lives of two families. White, an employee of Newport News Shipbuilding and a married father of two, was visiting a 27-year-old woman, Rebecca Damron, when the peaceful afternoon was shattered.
The perpetrator was identified as Lonnell Deandre Lilly III, the 34-year-old former boyfriend of Damron. Driven by a relentless obsession, Lilly had secretly made a key to her apartment. On that fateful Sunday, he let himself into the residence and confronted the pair. An argument quickly escalated into a violent struggle, during which Lilly produced a firearm and fired multiple shots. James Gerard White sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Rebecca Damron was also struck by the gunfire, suffering serious injuries that required hospitalization. Following the shooting, Lilly fled the scene in Damron's vehicle.
The search for Lonnell Deandre Lilly III was swift. He was apprehended by the Norfolk Police Department later that same day and turned over to the Newport News authorities. The investigation revealed a history of domestic issues, with prosecutors later arguing that Lilly's actions were born out of a desire to control Damron and a rage-fueled sense of entitlement upon finding her with another man. He was subsequently charged with a litany of serious offenses, including first-degree murder, aggravated malicious wounding, burglary, grand larceny, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
