In the early morning hours of June 11, 2020, the life of 48-year-old Dornell Waushi Chavous was tragically cut short in Portsmouth, Virginia. Emergency services received a call around 6:47 a.m. and responded to the 1100 block of Mount Vernon Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered Chavous suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso. Despite the efforts of the paramedics who arrived at the scene, he was pronounced dead.
The Portsmouth Police quickly began an investigation into the shooting
death of the Chesapeake man. Their inquiries soon led them to identify a suspect in the case. A few days later, on June 15, authorities publicly named 27-year-old Jevon M. Scott of Portsmouth as the man they believed to be responsible for Chavous's death. Police announced that they were searching for Scott and warned that he should be considered armed and dangerous.
Warrants were issued for Scott's arrest on multiple serious charges, including second-degree murder, robbery, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. A description of Scott was released to the public; he was described as a Black male, standing 5-foot-10 and weighing approximately 135 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Law enforcement urged anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to come forward as the search for him continued. There have been no subsequent online reports detailing the arrest, trial, or conviction of any suspect in connection with the death of Dornell Waushi Chavous.
