On September 7, 2023, 19-year-old Cameron James Duskin of Cincinnati, Ohio, was fatally shot during an attempted robbery in Fairfield. Authorities discovered Duskin deceased inside a vehicle that had collided with a semi-trailer in the rear parking lot of 4605 Dixie Highway, the location of a Goodwill store. The Butler County Coroner's Office confirmed that Duskin died from gunshot wounds, ruling his death a homicide.
The initial investigation by Fairfield police revealed that multiple individuals exchanged gunfire during the attempted robbery. Subsequent reports indicated that the incident was connected to a botched transaction involving Yeezy basketball shoes, arranged via social media. During the exchange, gunfire erupted, leading to Duskin's fatal injuries and the vehicle crash.
On November 15, 2023, law enforcement arrested 18-year-old Zakariya K. Davis in Elsmere, Kentucky, in connection with Duskin's death. Davis was charged with murder, aggravated robbery, and felonious assault. He was apprehended without incident by Fairfield police, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Regional Task Force, Kenton County Regional SWAT, and the Elsmere Police Department. Following his arrest, Davis was held at the Kenton County Jail pending an extradition hearing.
In October 2024, Davis pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter with a one-year gun specification and felonious assault. Butler County Common Pleas Judge Noah Powers II sentenced him to an indefinite prison term of 10 to 16 years. The prosecution emphasized that involvement in a felony resulting in death holds individuals accountable for the fatality, regardless of direct action. Davis's defense contended that he was merely a passenger during the incident and returned fire only after their vehicle was struck. Despite these claims, the court held Davis responsible for his role in the events leading to Duskin's death.
