A Black male, 29-year-old Daniel, was fatally wounded in a shooting that also left another man with life-threatening injuries. The incident unfolded around 3:20 a.m. in the 400 block of West 34th Street, where police responded to a call about a gunshot victim.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered both
men suffering from serious gunshot wounds. They were promptly transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for urgent medical care. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Daniel D. Yancey II succumbed to his injuries later that day. The second victim, who has not been publicly named, was expected to recover from his injuries.
Born on August 2, 1990, Daniel was a beloved member of his community. He had recently dedicated his life to Christ at the First Baptist Church of Denbeigh in Newport News. He was a former student of Lake Taylor High School and was remembered for his involvement in recreational football and baseball in his youth. A funeral service was held for him on July 18, 2020, at the Metropolitan Funeral Service, Granby Chapel, followed by his interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
The Norfolk Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of those responsible. However, to date, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
