In the cool evening of October 5, 2020, the life of 23-year-old Damarcus Gregory, a male resident of Richmond, Virginia, was tragically cut short. What was initially reported to Richmond Police as a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Broad Rock Boulevard and South Kinsley Avenue would soon reveal a more sinister story. First responders arrived at the scene around 7:52 p.m.
to find a vehicle that had veered off the road and into a wooded area in the 1900 block of South Kinsley Avenue.
Inside the car, in the driver's seat, they discovered Damarcus Gregory. It quickly became apparent that a car accident was not the primary cause of the incident. Gregory was suffering from a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. Homicide detectives were called in to take over the investigation, which was soon reclassified as a death investigation. The Medical Examiner would later officially determine the cause and manner of his death.
Investigators believe the shooting actually occurred a short distance away, in the 4100 block of Kinsley Avenue, on the north side of Broad Rock Boulevard. The evidence suggested that after being shot, Gregory's vehicle continued until it crashed. The chaotic nature of the event was further highlighted by another report from the 2600 block of Broad Rock Boulevard. The driver of another vehicle reported being struck by gunfire while passing through the same intersection, suffering injuries from broken glass. As of the latest reports, the Richmond Police Department has not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the shooting. The investigation into the death of Damarcus Gregory remains ongoing as detectives continue to seek information from the public to bring those responsible to justice.
