In the winter of 1992, a wave of violence gripped the city of Richmond, Virginia, as a ruthless drug trafficking gang known as the Newtowne Gang embarked on a brutal crime spree. Among their victims was Peyton M. Johnson, a 26-year-old male who was tragically killed on January 14, 1992. His death was part of a series of slayings that stunned the community and ultimately led to a significant federal prosecution.
The investigation into Johnson's murder and the other related homicides
quickly centered on the Newtowne Gang, which was co-founded by Corey Johnson. The gang was notorious for its involvement in the cocaine trade, and the string of killings was aimed at eliminating rivals and anyone perceived as a threat to their criminal enterprise. Over a period of just 45 days, the gang was responsible for the deaths of at least ten individuals in the Richmond area.
A federal investigation culminated in the indictment and arrest of Corey Johnson and several of his associates. The subsequent trial brought to light the sheer brutality of the gang's operations. Johnson, along with fellow gang members Richard Tipton and James H. Roane Jr., faced a litany of charges, including multiple counts of murder in furtherance of a continuing criminal enterprise.
The evidence presented in court painted a grim picture of the gang's activities and Corey Johnson's direct involvement in numerous murders, including that of Peyton Johnson. On February 3, 1993, a federal jury found Corey Johnson guilty of seven counts of murder. His accomplices, Tipton and Roane, were also convicted on multiple murder charges. Following the guilty verdicts, Corey Johnson was sentenced to death for his role in the killings. Richard Tipton and James H. Roane Jr. also received death sentences for their parts in the violent spree.
For nearly three decades, Corey Johnson remained on death row. His legal team filed numerous appeals, but his conviction and sentence were consistently upheld. On January 14, 2021, exactly 29 years to the day after Peyton M. Johnson's murder, Corey Johnson was executed by lethal injection at the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana. His accomplices, Richard Tipton and James H. Roane Jr., had their death sentences commuted to life in prison in December 2024.
