In Richmond, Virginia, on the evening of March 10, 2023, a young life was tragically cut short. Marquan Mitchell-Nash, a 13-year-old male, was fatally shot while playing with friends in his neighborhood. A student at Binford Middle School, Marquan was remembered by his family as a fun-loving and goofy young man who had a talent for making people laugh.
The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. on Stockton Street, where Richmond police officers responded to a report of a person down.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Marquan with a gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother, Kenyatta Nash, expressed her heartbreak and confusion over the sudden loss of her son, stating that she had not even allowed him to have toy guns. The shooting was described as accidental by authorities. It was later reported that the young people involved were filming a video using guns as props when the fatal shot was fired.
In connection with the shooting, a 14-year-old male was arrested and is facing several charges, including involuntary manslaughter. Police indicated that a gun had been stolen prior to the tragic event. The teenage suspect remains in custody. The death of Marquan prompted an emotional response from community leaders, including Richmond's mayor, who decried the accessibility of guns to children and urged residents to secure their firearms. Marquan's aunt also made a public plea to end gun violence, remembering her nephew as a wonderful young man whose life was senselessly taken.
