Mark Anthony Johnson Jr., a 35-year-old man, was killed just after midnight on November 6, 2020, when gunfire shattered the quiet of the 100 block of Hickok Circle in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Police were dispatched after a shots-fired call came in around 12:19 a.m., and when officers arrived they found him lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds. Rescue crews rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he did not survive.
In the first hours after the shooting, the block became a sealed-off scene. Officers established a perimeter and began working through the earliest clues they could gather in the dark, including a police K-9 track as part of the search for answers. From the start, investigators indicated they believed the killing involved more than one person, describing it as a homicide with multiple suspects and urging anyone who knew what happened—or what led up to it—to come forward.
As the investigation moved from the street into interviews and follow-ups, police continued to say they believed multiple suspects were involved, even as they worked toward identifying a responsible party. Then, a little over two weeks after the fatal shooting, authorities announced a break: an arrest made in connection with Johnson’s death.
On November 24, 2020, police said Isaiah Landry, 18, of Fredericksburg had been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Reports at the time said Landry was being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail. Even with the arrest, police statements still reflected an investigation that had not fully closed its circle, continuing to characterize the case as one involving multiple suspects and an ongoing effort to account for everyone involved.
