In the early morning hours of December 5, 2020, the life of 33-year-old Cory A. Hines of Richmond, Virginia, was tragically cut short. Hines, a Black male, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on West Broad Street, near a grocery store. He was transported by a private vehicle to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The Richmond Police Department was called to the scene at approximately 1:54 a.m.
to begin their investigation into the fatal shooting.
The investigation into Hines's death moved swiftly. With the crucial assistance of the VCU Police Department, who provided key evidence early on, detectives from the Richmond Police Department were able to identify a suspect. This collaboration between law enforcement agencies proved vital in the rapid progression of the case. The community was also encouraged to come forward with any additional information that could aid the investigation.
Just three days after the fatal shooting, on December 8, 2020, an arrest was made in connection with the homicide. Jarrett Fitzgerald was taken into custody and faced charges of robbery and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
