In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Richmond, Virginia, the life of 21-year-old Jayquan L. Powell was tragically cut short. On November 23, 2014, Powell, a Black male, became a victim of a double shooting on the city's Southside. Police responded to reports of gunfire in the 3200 block of Decatur Street, where they discovered two men on the ground.
Powell, a resident of Fairfield Avenue, was found with life-threatening injuries and was rushed to VCU Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries later that night. The other victim, 38-year-old Randy Smith Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident sent ripples of shock and grief through the community, where both men were known.
In the wake of the shooting, the Richmond Police Department launched an investigation into the double homicide. Authorities have reported following up on several leads, but as of now, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
