In the late afternoon of July 3, 2021, tragedy unfolded at a convenience store on Mechanicsville Turnpike in Richmond, Virginia, resulting in the death of 24-year-old Tephon Reid. Reid, a Black male from Chester, Virginia, was fatally shot during an incident that also led to the death of his assailant. The event drew a swift response from the Richmond Police Department, who arrived to a scene of chaos and discovered two men with gunshot wounds.
According to the official investigation,
the incident began when 28-year-old Grant Ellison of Richmond shot Tephon Reid. In a sudden and dramatic turn of events, another individual who was present at the scene but not initially involved, reacted to the shooting by firing at Ellison, killing him. Both Reid and Ellison were pronounced dead at the location.
Following the initial investigation, Richmond Police detectives identified Reid as the victim and Ellison as the offender who initiated the violence. They also determined that the person who shot Ellison had acted in response to the initial shooting. As a result, authorities announced that they were not seeking any other suspects in connection with the double shooting. The case was considered resolved, with the deaths of both the victim and the perpetrator at the scene.
