In the summer of 2003, a dedicated officer with the City of Richmond Police Department, Douglas Edward Wendel, lost his life in the line of duty. On July 30, the 41-year-old male officer, a five-year veteran of the force, was responding to a report of a suspected drug dealer in the city's southside, near the intersection of East 33rd Street and Midlothian Turnpike.
