Douglas Edward Wendel, a 41-year-old police officer with the Richmond Police Department, tragically lost his life on July 30, 2003. Officer Wendel was responding to a call involving a suspected drug dealer on East 33rd Street, near Midlothian Turnpike, in Richmond's southside. Upon approaching one of the suspects and asking for identification, the situation quickly escalated.
