Lyle P. McMurtray, a 23-year-old white male from Dutton, Virginia, was discovered deceased on May 31, 2014, in a parked SUV within the Gilpin Court neighborhood of Richmond. An investigation by the Richmond Police quickly determined that he had sustained a fatal gunshot wound, and his death was ruled a homicide. At the time of his death, McMurtray was a valued informant for the Drug Enforcement Administration and was slated to provide crucial testimony in upcoming narcotics trials against two brothers, Xavier and Thomas Hopkins.
The investigation into McMurtray's murder revealed a plot to silence him before he could testify. On the night he was killed, McMurtray was in contact with Xavier Hopkins to arrange a heroin purchase. Hopkins, in turn, coordinated with Montrio Santos Neville to carry out the transaction, which was ultimately a setup for McMurtray's murder. Evidence collected from the scene, including a plastic sandwich bag containing heroin found in McMurtray's hand, contained a DNA mixture that included Neville's DNA. Further connecting Neville to the crime, cell phone records indicated that the last call McMurtray received was from a phone that Neville later admitted to using.
Following the investigation, Montrio Santos Neville was arrested and faced a jury trial on a slew of charges related to the death of Lyle McMurtray. These charges included murder, conspiracy to commit murder, distribution of heroin, possession of a firearm while distributing heroin, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a murder. The case highlighted the inherent dangers faced by individuals who cooperate with law enforcement in narcotics investigations, as McMurtray's role as an informant was the direct motive for his murder.
