In Richmond, Virginia, a young boy's life was tragically cut short in a devastating accident that highlighted the urgent need for firearm safety. Ten-year-old Teon K. 'Toodie' Burwell, a Black male, was at his home on Angela Drive on the evening of March 16, 2021, when he came across a loaded gun.
While playing, Teon accidentally shot himself in front of his 12-year-old brother. The single bullet struck a main artery, causing life-threatening injuries.
Emergency services were called to the 3700 block of Angela Drive, and upon arrival, Richmond Police found the young boy with a severe gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The Richmond Police Department investigated the incident, but no suspects were sought as the shooting was determined to be a tragic accident. Authorities did not file any charges in connection with Teon's death. The Medical Examiner's office was tasked with determining the official cause and manner of death.
Teon's family, including his mother and older sister, were left heartbroken by the sudden and shocking loss. His grandmother, Louise Shelton, spoke of her devastation and emphasized the importance of keeping firearms secured and out of the reach of children. The community mourned the loss of a boy described as being full of joy and laughter, who had dreams of trying out for the basketball team. Known for his love of dressing well and taking pictures, Teon's vibrant personality left a lasting impression on those who knew him. In the wake of this tragedy, his family set up a GoFundMe account to help with funeral expenses.
