On an autumn evening in Virginia Beach, a dispute that began earlier in the night would tragically escalate, leaving two cousins dead and a community in mourning. The lives of 38-year-old William Moore, a Black male, and his cousin, Joseph Moore, were cut short on October 28, 2021, in a violent confrontation outside the Allure nightclub.
The events of that fateful night started with a conflict between William Moore and another man, Trayvon McCoy.
Following the initial disagreement, McCoy went to his car and retrieved a rifle. He then confronted William in the nightclub's parking lot. After a brief and heated exchange, McCoy fired at close range, striking William in the chest. As Joseph Moore attempted to flee the chaotic scene, he too was shot by McCoy, struck in the back.
Bystanders rushed to the aid of the fallen cousins, attempting to provide first aid, but their injuries were too severe. Both William and Joseph Moore succumbed to their wounds at the scene. The investigation that followed moved swiftly, aided by surveillance footage from the area and crucial testimonies from witnesses who had seen the horrific events unfold. This evidence quickly pointed to Trayvon McCoy as the gunman.
The day after the shooting, law enforcement located and arrested McCoy at a hotel in Virginia Beach. During the subsequent investigation, he admitted to shooting both William and Joseph Moore. However, McCoy claimed that he had acted in self-defense, a claim that was contradicted by the fact that he did not see any weapons on either of the victims.
In September 2023, Trayvon McCoy stood trial for the killings. A jury, after hearing the evidence presented, found him guilty of aggravated murder, first-degree murder, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. McCoy's defense team argued that he believed his life was in danger, but the prosecution successfully countered that he had the option to leave the scene rather than resort to deadly violence. For his crimes, Trayvon McCoy was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, with an additional 43 years.
