In the early evening of June 22, 2022, the sound of gunfire shattered the quiet of a Portsmouth, Virginia neighborhood. When police responded to reports of a shooting on Hickory Street at approximately 6:51 p.m., they discovered 19-year-old Naquan OShea Madison, a Black male, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. His death marked the 17th homicide in the city that year, a grim statistic that left the community reeling.
Witnesses at the scene described the tragic event as a drive-by
shooting, a sudden act of violence that stole a young life. In the days that followed, the Portsmouth Police Department launched an intensive investigation. Their efforts soon led them to identify an 18-year-old, Deon Marqual Wade, as a person of interest in connection with the shooting. Investigators also released information about two vehicles they believed were involved: a black sedan and a silver minivan.
