On a tragic Saturday, May 11, 2024, the life of 46-year-old Antwain Lamont Terry was cut short by gunfire in Portsmouth, Virginia. The fatal encounter unfolded in the 800 block of Wilcox Avenue, where police were called to investigate reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr. Terry suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate response and medical aid rendered at the scene, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of the male victim spanned several months, culminating in charges against two individuals. Nearly four months after the incident, on September 9, 2024, the Portsmouth Police Department announced a significant breakthrough in the case. Keonte Jamal Whitfield, 25, was identified as the primary suspect and faced a charge of first-degree murder along with firearm-related offenses. He was subsequently taken into custody. Alongside him, 36-year-old Brittaneique Whitfield was charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. It was anticipated that she would voluntarily surrender to the authorities.
The legal proceedings that followed brought a resolution to the case. Keonte Jamal Whitfield ultimately pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. In addition to this, he also pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, discharge of a firearm in a public place, and reckless handling of a firearm. As a result of his plea agreement, he was sentenced to serve 13 years in prison for his role in the death of Antwain Terry. The case shed light on a violent confrontation that ultimately led to a man losing his life and another facing a lengthy period of incarceration.
