On an unfortunate evening in Richmond, Virginia, the life of 18-year-old Jessie Crumble-Bullock was tragically cut short. On August 13, 2022, the young Black / African American man was returning home from a corner store in the Gilpin Court area when he was pursued by an assailant who opened fire. As he sought refuge inside his home, the gunfire persisted, striking both him and his mother, Jessica Crumble.
Both were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for their injuries.
Despite the urgent medical attention, Jessie Crumble-Bullock succumbed to his wounds shortly after arriving at the hospital. His mother, who was shot in the hand while reportedly trying to protect her son, was treated for her injuries and later released. The community was left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a young man who was remembered for his respectful nature and his passion for sports. He had just celebrated his 18th birthday in July and was looking forward to playing football for John Marshall High School.
In the wake of the shooting, the Richmond Police Department swiftly launched an investigation. Their efforts led to the arrest of 19-year-old Delmontae Lewis near the scene of the crime. Initially, Lewis was charged with possession of a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon with an extended magazine. However, following a grand jury indictment, the charges were elevated to include murder, malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and shooting into an occupied structure. His jury trial was scheduled to take place in January 2023.
