On New Year's Day in 2006, the city of Richmond, Virginia, was shaken by a horrific discovery that marked the beginning of a reign of terror. Bryan Harvey, a 49-year-old male, was found murdered in his home alongside his wife, Kathryn, and their two young daughters, nine-year-old Stella and four-year-old Ruby. Harvey was a well-regarded musician, known as the guitarist and singer for the rock duo House of Freaks.
The family had been preparing to host a chili dinner for friends when tragedy struck. A family friend arrived to find the house engulfed in smoke and immediately called for help.
Investigators arriving at the scene were met with a grim tableau. The bodies of Bryan, Kathryn, and their daughters were discovered in the basement of their burning home. They had been bound, beaten with a hammer, and had their throats slashed. The official causes of death were determined to be blunt-force trauma to the head for Bryan and Kathryn, while Stella died from smoke inhalation and blunt-force trauma, and Ruby from stab wounds. In an attempt to conceal their horrific acts, the perpetrators had set the house on fire before fleeing with a few of the family's possessions, including a computer, a wedding ring, and a basket of cookies.
The investigation into the brutal slayings quickly led law enforcement to two suspects: Ricky Javon Gray and his nephew, Ray Joseph Dandridge. The duo was apprehended in Philadelphia just six days after the murders. Following their arrests, both men confessed to their involvement in the Harvey family massacre. Their confessions revealed a chilling narrative of a home invasion turned deadly. Gray and Dandridge had been searching for a house to rob when they noticed the Harvey's front door was open, providing them with an easy opportunity. It was later revealed that an accomplice, Ashley Baskerville, had acted as a lookout during the crime.
The legal proceedings that followed brought some measure of justice for the heinous crimes. Ricky Gray was charged with five counts of capital murder in the Harvey killings. In August 2006, a jury found him guilty on all charges after only 30 minutes of deliberation. He was subsequently sentenced to death for the murders of Stella and Ruby Harvey and received a life sentence for the murders of their parents. His nephew, Ray Dandridge, pleaded guilty to his role in the murders and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. After a series of appeals, Ricky Gray was executed by lethal injection on January 18, 2017.
