In the late summer evening of August 14, 2022, the life of 15-year-old LeQuan D. Smith, a Black male, was tragically cut short in a senseless act of gun violence in Petersburg, Virginia. Known for his kind-hearted nature and a fondness for Ninja Turtles and wrestling figures, LeQuan was a young man with a future full of potential. That evening, he was with another teenager at a local convenience store, a familiar neighborhood spot.
The two were standing in the doorway of Shortt's Grocery
on Harding and Mistletoe Streets when a silver Ford Explorer or Mercury Mountaineer reportedly drove by. Gunfire erupted from the vehicle, striking both LeQuan and the other boy. The sudden violence shattered the ordinary Sunday night, leaving chaos and fear in its wake. Emergency services were called to the scene, and both teenagers were rushed to a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, LeQuan D. Smith succumbed to his injuries. The other teen, who was also wounded in the attack, survived.
The Petersburg Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, with law enforcement appealing to the public for any information regarding the suspect vehicle or the individuals involved.
