In the late hours of a Tuesday night, spilling into the early moments of Wednesday, September 16, 2015, the life of 30-year-old Benjamin Coleman Jr. was tragically cut short in Petersburg, Virginia. Known affectionately to his loved ones as 'BJ,' Coleman was discovered inside an apartment located in the 700 block of Hemlock Circle, within the Pecan Acres neighborhood.
He had sustained a gunshot wound, and despite being rushed to Southside Regional Medical Center, he succumbed to his injury.
Benjamin, a kind-hearted and joyous individual, was a devoted father whose love for his son was described as immeasurable. He was an active member of the Harvest International Full Gospel Baptist Center and worked for The Brickman Group Landscape Maintenance Company. His passion for music was evident from his time in the Petersburg High School Marching Band and as part of a musical group he formed with his brother and a close friend. His sudden and violent death left a profound void in the lives of his family and all who knew him.
In the wake of the shooting, the Petersburg Police Department launched a homicide investigation, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to a breakthrough in the case. However, despite the passage of time, the investigation into Benjamin Coleman Jr.'s death has remained open and unsolved. To date, there have been no arrests made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with his murder, leaving his family and community still waiting for justice.
