Patrol Officer William T. Swafford of the Petersburg Bureau of Police, Virginia, tragically lost his life on February 18, 1952. Officer Swafford was on duty when he observed a burglary in progress on North Sycamore Street at approximately 1:30 am. In an attempt to apprehend the suspect, he tried to block the vehicle with his patrol car.
