Detective James M. Young, aged 62, tragically lost his life on July 11, 1919, in Petersburg, Virginia. Detective Young was inadvertently shot and killed by another officer during a shootout with a larceny suspect near the foot of 3rd Street. The incident began when two men were caught attempting to steal items from a third man inside a hotel on East Bank Street.
