In the early evening hours of October 2, 2023, the life of William Henry 'JJ' Hayes Jr., a 50-year-old Black male from Chesterfield, Virginia, was tragically cut short in a Petersburg neighborhood. Just before 8 p.m., officers from the Petersburg Bureau of Police were dispatched to the vicinity of South West Street and Young Avenue following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Hayes, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
A 1992 graduate of Petersburg High School, Hayes was remembered for his vibrant personality and his deep involvement in the community. He had realized a lifelong ambition by becoming an over-the-road truck driver. His personal life was marked by a long and loving relationship with his high school sweetheart, Tabitha Hayes, who became his wife of 31 years. Together, they raised four children and were blessed with a grandson.
The investigation into the homicide of William Henry Hayes Jr. was immediately initiated by the Petersburg Police. Despite their efforts and condolences extended to the grieving family, there have been no public reports of any arrests being made in connection with his death. Authorities have not identified any suspects in the ongoing investigation. The community has been urged to come forward with any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case and bring closure to his family.
