In the early evening hours of October 2, 2023, the life of William Henry 'JJ' Hayes Jr., a 50-year-old Black male from Chesterfield, Virginia, was tragically cut short in a Petersburg neighborhood. Just before 8 p.m., officers from the Petersburg Bureau of Police were dispatched to the vicinity of South West Street and Young Avenue following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Hayes, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
