Patrol Officer Robert B. Hatchell, aged 45, tragically lost his life on July 18, 1943, in Petersburg, Virginia. Officer Hatchell was shot and killed with his own weapon following a brief vehicle pursuit of a stolen car. The incident occurred when the stolen vehicle went over an embankment near the back of the old Petersburg Hospital, prompting the driver to flee on foot.
