In the late hours of a September evening, the life of Zaair Tuck, a 31-year-old Black/African American man from Elizabeth, New Jersey, was tragically cut short. On September 24, 2012, Tuck had gone to visit a friend in downtown Elizabeth, a visit from which he would never return home. He was found on the sidewalk outside his friend's residence, the victim of a fatal shooting.
His death left his family, including his mother, Carmen Tuck, and his young daughter, Avyanna, in a state of profound and lasting grief.
Growing up in Elizabeth with his mother and younger brother, Freddy, Zaair's life had its share of challenges. He spent some time in and out of foster care during his teenage years but was known to be a devoted son. In the years before his death, the birth of his daughter had brought a positive change to his life, renewing his connection to his faith. Carmen noted that becoming a father was a long-held dream of his and that his daughter's arrival had a transformative effect on him.
The night of his death, Tuck had received persistent calls and messages from a friend to come over. Despite a sense of unease from his mother, he left for his friend's house around 9 p.m. According to police reports, a car with an unidentified man pulled up, demanding marijuana from Tuck, possibly mistaking him for a dealer. When Tuck stated he didn't have any but could find someone who did, the man reportedly became anxious and shot him. The fatal wound was a gunshot to the neck.
In the years that have followed, the investigation into Zaair Tuck's murder has yielded no arrests, and the identity of his killer remains unknown. The lack of resolution has compounded the pain for his family, who continue to seek answers and justice. The case remains an unsolved homicide, a painful reminder of a life taken too soon and the enduring impact of violence on a family and a community.
