In the summer of 2023, a life was abruptly cut short on the streets of Elizabeth, New Jersey. David Ernesto Guevara, a 33-year-old male, was found on the evening of June 23rd in the vicinity of Spring Street and 3rd Avenue, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. When Elizabeth Police Officers arrived at the scene at approximately 9:39 p.m., they discovered Guevara, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The tragic event prompted a thorough and collaborative investigation involving several law enforcement agencies. Detectives from the Union County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Task Force, the Elizabeth Police Department, the Union County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit, and the Union County Police Ballistics Unit worked together to piece together the events that led to Guevara's death.
Their combined efforts soon pointed them toward a suspect.
Less than a month after the shooting, on July 6, 2023, an arrest was made in connection with the killing. Joel J. Argueta, a 20-year-old resident of Elizabeth, was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder and weapons offenses for his alleged role in the death of David Guevara. Following his arrest, authorities announced that Argueta was facing the possibility of a life sentence in state prison if convicted of the charges brought against him.
