In the summer of 2015, a wave of violence cast a dark shadow over the city of Elizabeth, New Jersey, forever altering the lives of several families. On June 25th, Dennis Vega, a 28-year-old male resident of the city, was found deceased in the area of New Point Road and 7th Street. His death was the result of a fatal shooting, an act that was part of a much larger and more terrifying string of events.
The investigation into Dennis Vega's death soon revealed a chilling connection to other recent shootings in the area. Authorities identified Todd West as the suspect, not only in Vega's murder but in a spree of seemingly random and senseless violence that spanned two states. Driving a white Buick LaCrosse, West went on a rampage, using a. 38 caliber revolver to shoot multiple victims within a matter of hours.
This crime spree included the murders of Jamil Payne and Kelvin Nelson on the same day as Vega, and the attempted murder of another man who survived his injuries.
As the investigation deepened, it was discovered that West's violent acts had begun even earlier. A month prior to the June shootings, he had murdered his own cousin, Michael Thompkins. Following the killings in New Jersey, West traveled to Pennsylvania and continued his deadly spree over the July 4th weekend, murdering three more individuals in Easton and Allentown.
When apprehended, West's alleged motive was as bizarre as his crimes were brutal; he claimed that the devil had forced him to commit the murders. In December 2016, a grand jury indicted Todd West for the murders of Dennis Vega and the other New Jersey victims. At the time of this indictment, West was already serving three consecutive life sentences in Pennsylvania for the murders he committed there. The community was left to grapple with the shocking reality of one man's devastating path of destruction.
