In the early morning hours of Saturday, August 12, 2023, the life of 27-year-old Jameer Selx Outsey was tragically cut short on a street corner in Elizabeth, New Jersey. A former standout football player, Outsey was discovered with a gunshot wound at the intersection of North Broad Street and Magnolia Avenue. Police officers, responding to reports of the shooting, found him injured at the scene.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
Jameer Outsey, a Bridgewater resident, was a celebrated athlete who had shown immense promise from his high school days at Franklin Township High School, where he graduated in 2014. His football career continued at the collegiate level, playing for both the University of Iowa and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. At UNLV, he was a defensive lineman who played in 24 games over the 2017 and 2018 seasons and was recognized for his academic achievements.
The investigation into Outsey's death led authorities to Maurice Pierce, then 23 years old, of Plainfield. In late September 2023, Pierce surrendered to the Elizabeth Police Department. He was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder and multiple weapons offenses in connection with the fatal shooting.
Maurice Pierce, a Piscataway man, later pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated manslaughter and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. On Friday, August 22, 2025, a Union County Superior Court Judge sentenced Pierce to 25 years in state prison for his role in Jameer Outsey's death. Under the terms of his sentence, he will be required to serve over 21 years, or 85 percent of his term, before becoming eligible for parole.
