Franklin Mendez, a 23-year-old male from Elizabeth, New Jersey, was killed in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 30, 2026, after gunfire broke out on Caldwell Place in Elizabeth. Prosecutors said Calderon was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, and second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun. His arrest came on June 2, 2026, when the U.S. Marshals Service located him in Garden City, Georgia.
After his arrest in Georgia, Calderon was held at the Chatham County Detention Center while awaiting extradition back to New Jersey. Authorities did not publicly release details about whether Calderon knew Mendez, what may have sparked the shooting, or whether any additional suspects were being sought. Funeral services were scheduled in Rahway on June 6, 2026, with burial planned in El Salvador. While public law enforcement releases focused mainly on the shooting and the arrest, the memorial notices described a family and community mourning someone whose life ended abruptly in a violent attack.
