In the early morning hours of May 29, 2022, tragedy struck on the streets of Elizabeth, New Jersey, when a young Black/African American man's life was cut short by gunfire. Lamar Turner, a 24-year-old resident of West Orange, was found on the 200 block of North Broad Street with a fatal gunshot wound. The incident unfolded around 3 a.m. as Elizabeth Police Department patrol units responded to reports of shots fired in the area.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered the grim scene. Not far from where Turner lay, a second victim, a 21-year-old woman, was found on Julian Place suffering from non-life-threatening injuries. She was quickly transported to University Hospital for treatment. For Lamar Turner, however, it was too late.
The investigation into Turner's death was swiftly launched, led by the Union County Homicide Task Force in conjunction with the Elizabeth Police Department.
They were joined by the Union County Police Department Ballistics Unit and the Union County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit, all working to piece together the events of that fatal morning. Despite their efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
Authorities have publicly appealed for information, urging anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward. A substantial reward of up to $10,000 has been offered by the Union County Crime Stoppers for information that leads to an indictment and conviction. The investigation into the death of Lamar Turner remains active and ongoing as his family and community await answers and justice.
