In the early morning hours of a summer Sunday, tragedy struck the city of Elizabeth, New Jersey, forever altering the lives of one family. On July 16, 2017, Ricardo Nieto, a 33-year-old man, was found shot in the driveway of his home on the corner of Niles and 5th streets. The shocking discovery was made after police responded to reports of gunfire in the neighborhood at approximately 2:50 a.m.
Nieto was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after authorities arrived, leaving a community in mourning and a family searching for answers.
In the weeks that followed, investigators from the Union County Prosecutor's Office and the Elizabeth Police Department worked to piece together the events that led to Nieto's death. Their efforts led to the identification of a vehicle of interest, a light-colored, two-door car with a sunroof, which was captured on surveillance video in the area on the night of the shooting. Authorities believe the car may have had out-of-state license plates and had been in the neighborhood for several hours before the fatal encounter.
As the investigation progressed, a sketch of a person of interest was developed and released to the public in the hopes of generating new leads. The drawing depicted a young man with dark skin and short dark hair. A significant reward of $10,000 was offered by the Union County Crime Stoppers for any information that would lead to an arrest and indictment in the case. Despite these efforts, and the public pleas for assistance, the case has remained unsolved, with no arrests announced in the years since Ricardo Nieto's untimely death.
