In the residential neighborhood of Elizabeth, New Jersey, on the afternoon of May 19, 2014, a violent act shattered the calm. First responders rushed to the 600 block of South Park Street shortly before 5 p.m., where they discovered 18-year-old Jonathan Landaverde in a backyard, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The young man was transported to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation by the Union County Homicide Task Force and the Elizabeth Police Department soon revealed that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Authorities determined that Landaverde's death was a calculated murder connected to gang activity. Landaverde was allegedly a member of the 18th Street gang, a rival of the notorious Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13. The investigation uncovered a chilling motive: the murder was an initiation rite for a new member of MS-13.
The intricate web of the crime led to the arrests of five members of MS-13.
Among those charged were German Lisandro Benites Moreno, identified as a high-ranking member who allegedly ordered the killing, Carlos Amaya, and Luis Alfaro. Two other individuals, who were juveniles at the time of the murder, were also charged. Moreno had reportedly traveled to Elizabeth to recruit new members and assert the gang's dominance. He allegedly ordered two juveniles to kill Landaverde. One of the juveniles was already an MS-13 member, while the other was initiated into the gang as a result of the fatal shooting. Following the murder, four of the five defendants fled New Jersey in an attempt to evade capture but were eventually located and arrested. The charges brought against the suspects included murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and gang criminality.
