On a cold December evening in Elizabeth, New Jersey, the life of 19-year-old Haneef Brockington was tragically cut short. On Sunday, December 29, 2019, shortly before 10:45 p.m., police responded to a distressing scene at a gas station parking lot on the 300 block of Morris Avenue. There, they found the young man, a resident of Elizabeth, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response, Haneef, a male, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation that followed involved a collaborative effort from several law enforcement agencies, including the Union County Homicide Task Force, the Elizabeth Police Department, and the Union County Sheriff’s Office. Their determined work led to the identification of two suspects in connection with the fatal shooting. This breakthrough brought a measure of hope for justice for Haneef and his grieving loved ones.
Approximately a month after the incident, on January 31, 2020, the Union County Prosecutor's Office announced the arrests of two individuals. George Thompson, a 22-year-old from Newark, and a 17-year-old juvenile whose name was withheld due to his age, were taken into custody. Both were charged with murder and related weapons offenses, marking a significant development in a case that had deeply affected the Elizabeth community.
