In the summer of 2015, a wave of violence shook the city of Elizabeth, New Jersey, culminating in the tragic death of Kelvin Nelson. On the night of Thursday, June 25, 2015, the 32-year-old Elizabeth resident, known to his loved ones as 'Kuke,' was gunned down in the 300 block of Clark Place. Responding to reports of gunfire at approximately 10:50 p.m., police officers discovered Nelson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nelson's death was not an isolated incident but rather the third fatal shooting in a single-day spree that terrorized the city. The deadly rampage began in the early morning hours and continued into the night, leaving a trail of victims. Earlier that evening, at around 9:50 p.m., another man, Jamil Payne, 28, was also shot and killed. The series of shootings prompted an intensive joint investigation by the Union County Homicide Task Force and the Elizabeth Police Department, as authorities worked to piece together the events and identify the person responsible for the bloodshed.
The investigation led to the arrest of 22-year-old Todd West of Elizabeth. Authorities charged West with the murders of Kelvin Nelson, Jamil Payne, and a third victim, 28-year-old Dennis Vega, who was killed earlier on the same day. West was also charged with the attempted murder of a fourth individual who was shot and wounded during the spree. The shootings were carried out by a gunman in a white vehicle, who seemingly targeted his victims in separate attacks across the city. In addition to the June 25th shooting spree, West was also implicated in the May 18, 2015, shooting death of his cousin, 29-year-old Michael Tompkins. The string of violent acts left the community in mourning and searching for answers as they grappled with the senseless loss of life.
