A night of unrest in Elizabeth, New Jersey, tragically ended the life of 26-year-old Daniel Louis of Irvington. In the early morning hours of April 1, 2018, a dispute that began outside of a gentlemen's club on Elizabeth Avenue escalated into violence. A large crowd had assembled when a fight broke out, punctuated by the sound of gunshots fired into the air, scattering the onlookers.
In the ensuing chaos, a number of individuals, including Louis, moved into a parking lot directly across
the street. It was in this parking lot that Daniel Louis, who was unarmed, was fatally shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The violence did not end with his death. Immediately after Louis was shot, a shootout erupted in the parking lot among four men.
Two Elizabeth police officers, who were on patrol and heard the initial gunshots, arrived on foot to witness the active firefight. As they approached, two of the shooters opened fire on the officers before fleeing in a Maserati. A vehicle pursuit followed, stretching into the neighboring city of Newark, where the suspects ultimately abandoned their vehicle and escaped.
In the days and weeks that followed, a thorough investigation by law enforcement led to the identification and apprehension of four suspects. The Union County Prosecutor's Office announced the arrests of Sharif Q. Robinson, 27, of Jersey City, along with Pierre Cadet, 21, Don LaFortune, 23, and Jonathan Philippe, 25, all from Irvington. Robinson was identified as the individual who shot Daniel Louis and was subsequently charged with first-degree murder. All four men faced a series of weapons-related charges for their involvement in the shootout that followed. The arrests brought a close to the manhunt, with the last suspect being apprehended in early May 2018.
